Brazil's ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) has announced a timetable for the country's new energy auctions and cancelled an upcoming 2020 tender.

Through an official announcement, MME has set the dates for bids in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

Next year's A-3 and A-4 energy tenders will sign up for wind, solar, biomass and hydroelectric power, while the A-5 and A-6 tenders will also include coal, natural gas and municipal solid waste projects, the document said.

In March, Brazil's ministry of Mines and Energy announced the postponement of tenders for energy and transmission projects, originally scheduled for the next few months. It is also a response to the "international public health emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic".

Specifically, the government postponed six tenders: new energy and existing energy tenders, known as A-4 and A-6, and tenders for transmission lines and for the supply of off-grid systems.

The new A-4 energy tender, originally scheduled for 28 May, is the only one related to renewable energy. These include 51,438 megawatts of hydropower, wind, solar and biomass projects. But, the government said at the time, "the 2020 tender will not be cancelled, but postponed until the public health situation returns to normal."

In addition to energy, Brazil has delayed the bidding for its highly anticipated 5G project. In June, Leonardo Euler, head of Brazil's national telecommunications authority, said the country would not hold an auction of 5G mobile licences until the first half of next year.Mobile broadband and TELEVISION services on the spectrum have been delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, ruling out any possibility of an initial auction in 2020.
