The US Energy Information Agency (EIA) announced on Monday that developers and power plant owners plan to start commercial operations in 2021, adding 39.7 gigawatts of new generation capacity.

According to the announcement, solar energy will account for the largest share of new installed capacity, accounting for 39%, followed by wind energy, accounting for 31%.

Solar energy is expected to make the largest contribution in 2021, with grid connected utility scale solar power generation increasing by a record 15.4 GW.

"About 3% of the new power generation capacity will come from the new nuclear reactor at the wagertel power plant in Georgia," the US Energy Information Administration said

Another 12.2 gigawatts of wind power capacity is expected to come online in 2021.

The largest wind power project to go live in 2021 will be the 999 megawatt traverse wind farm in Oklahoma.

In addition to wind and solar installations, the EIA expects utility scale battery storage capacity to quadruple, as the additional 4.3 gigawatts of battery power will be available by the end of 2021.

In general, the rapid growth of wind energy, solar energy and renewable energy is the main driving force of battery capacity expansion, because battery storage systems are increasingly combined with renewable energy.

"The world's largest solar cell (409mw) is being built at the manatee Solar Center in Florida; it is planned to go into operation by the end of 2021," the government said.
