AuREUS solar Windows were inspired by polar auroras
New technologies based on organic waste will help integrate photovoltaic technology into buildings.We're talking about AuREUS, the invention named best sustainable development at the James Dyson Awards 2020.The system was designed by Carvey Ehren Maigue, a young electrical engineering student at the University of Mapua in the Philippines.As the name suggests, inspiration comes directly from the polar aurora.These famous optical phenomena occur when energetic charged particles from the Sun collide with atoms in the atmosphere.The interaction excites some of the electrons of these atoms, causing the emission of light during the return to the initial state.
AuREUS USES a similar principle.The technology is based on polymeric materials containing luminescent organic particles extracted from plant waste.This element converts high-energy ultraviolet light waves into low-energy visible light waves.Visible light, in turn, is converted into electricity by placing a photovoltaic film along the edge.
In fact, so-called luminescent solar concentrators are nothing new.But the waste-based option is the opposite."Since the particles used in the matrix can come from fruit and vegetable waste, we provide farmers with another way to compensate for losses, even when crops are wasted," the inventors said."For example, we can recover crops from natural disasters like typhoons.In this way, we can look to the future and solve the current problems.Seventy-eight local crops have been tested so far, nine of which have high potential.
Maigue also explains how AuREUS can capture UV without direct sunlight.In fact, it can rely on ultraviolet light scattering in clouds and radiation bouncing off walls, sidewalks and other buildings.Even in small areas, this would allow for vertical solar parks in urban areas.The next step?"I want to look at how to get the product to market immediately, but also promote research and development.I wanted to create thread and fabric so that even clothing could collect ultraviolet light and convert it into electricity.We also want to create curved plates for electric cars, airplanes and even ships.
