What is a ground mount solar system? And what are they used for?

solar mounting

The ground mounting solar system refers to a method of installation of the Solar Pv panels onto the ground. They are usually installed on the ground in most cases where the roofs/rooftops surface is an unavailable or not suitable place for installment.

The ground mounts solar system installation requires to be placed on a wide-open space that covers over about 1,000 square feet. The ground area should be an area that has good sun exposure with the lack/absence of any shading obstructions.

The stacked solar panels being installed on the ground are usually placed on solar racking systems.  A solar tracking system is purposefully set on the ground which serves the purpose of making solar PV panels fit perfectly in the installation area.

There are two min types of ground-mounted solar systems which include: (i) the Standard Ground mounting system,  (ii) The pole mount ground mounting system.

The following are the advantages of Ground Mounting Solar Panels:

Ø They are potentially safer

Sometimes can occur electrical problems within the PV solar panels which may cause accidents like fire risks and outbreaks. They can be a result of many factors such as currents & electric flow imbalances. In the case of roof-mounted solar systems, such problems occurring may cause direct impact and harm in the household due to their location being on the roof of the household.

Unlike the Ground mounting solar system, such electrical problems occurring can be easily controlled and may cause less harm. This is because this system is not bonded closer or near to the household as they have independent installation ground.

Ø They are More Efficient:

The Ground mounting solar PV panels are more efficient as they can easily reach a higher energy production. Hence; this facilitates other household activities such as Farming, agricultural activities, etc. which may require a higher power supply to take place.

The Ground mounting solar systems are durable and have long life cycles which makes them a sustainable means of power generation.

Ø They are easy to maintain

The Ground mounts solar panels are easy to maintain and monitor since they are located on the ground(unlike the rooftop mounting solar systems).

This creates full control of the solar PV panels which creates simplicity in the repairing process.

Moreover, they also offer cleaning of the panels, or replacement of the panels when needed to be easier.

Apart from the advantages of Ground mounting PV panels and systems, they also have several drawbacks.

The following are the drawbacks of ground mounting solar systems:

Ø Enough Open land is required

The Solar Ground mount installation may require a wide-open space of land with enough sun exposure and fewer shading obstructions. Averagely, they need up to about 1,000 square feet of a normal household. Hence, they would be preferable to be installed in rural/sub-urban areas than in rural areas.

Ø High Cost(Expensive)

The Ground mounting systems installation is relatively higher than the rooftop mounting solar system installation.

The ground mounting solar systems usually require longer wiring systems that facilitates the connection from the panels and to the household. This will require extra wiring costs which will generally lead to higher installation costs.

In addition, the general purchasing cost of the ground-mounted solar system is higher as it has more requirements compared to roof solar mounting systems.

Ø It May have several Environmental Impacts:

The installation of the solar ground mount racking system comes before the installation of the ground-mounted solar system. Their installations highly require clearance of land completely to create wide-open land. And once they land is cleared, it is then covered with gravel.

This will not only lead to loss of minerals in the land that enhances fertility but also clearance of any vegetation cover and plants at large.

Apart from the Pros and Cons of the Ground mount solar system, we also have several uses provided by this solar system.

The following are the uses of ground mount solar system in general:

• For Household/residential purposes. The ground-mounted solar system provides a sustainable flow of power within the household hold. This facilitates the use of home appliances such as refrigerators, Air Conditioners, and also provides sustainable lighting within the house.

• For Agricultural purposes. The ground-mounted solar system can be installed to reach a higher energy supply. This may also facilitate the usage of power outside of the household for other purposes such as agricultural activities

• For Industrial Purposes: Some of the Ground mounting solar systems can be created purposefully to provide high energy density to fir large scale activities such as Industrial production. Some Industries may use the ground solar system for power supply as it has several many advantages over the other energy supply systems.

• They can also be used as an alternative power source: Since the Solar Pv panels store energy that can be used for future purposes, they can serve the use of energy in times of need. Occurring catastrophes such as hurricanes, extreme storms, etc may cause chaos and harm to the General Electricity supply. Hence, the stored energy in the ground set solar PV panels will help to provide sustainable energy in times when needed.

Generally, the development of the Ground mounting systems has been used on a wide scale in many other categories. This has led to the growth of companies and industries which deal with the production, marketing, and supply of these solar systems.
