Types of Roof Solar Mounting Systems and Their Uses

Roof solar mounting systems are the methods of solar installation used to install solar panels on top of a roof. The installation structures are particularly made of stainless steel or aluminum

Most households and commercial buildings prefer roof-mounted solar systems since they are more economical than ground-mounted solar systems. Also, when solar panels are mounted on the roof, they are safer than when they are mounted on the ground.

There are different types of solar mounting systems used to install solar panels on top of roofs. In this article, we get to state and review these systems and their uses. Different roof types call for different mounting systems.

1. Flat roof mounting system

This system applies to flat roof types. They mostly use a ballast system which uses gravity to keep solar panels in place. A ballast system is when concrete blocks are used to hold the solar panels. These blocks help reduce the need to drill holes in the roof.

However, if a roof is not strong enough to support the extra weight, there might be a need for some holes. In this case, the panels are going to attach to the mounting systems through either clamps or clips.

The installation process in a flat roof mounting system can be easy since the mounts are placed on a large and flat surface. This system mostly uses foot as the base assembly. Solar panels can be mounted at a perfect angle to increase their electricity production.

In a scenario where a roof faces just one direction, the system produces less electricity daily. So, the panels can be oriented to face the other direction and installed at a correct angle regardless of the direction the roof faces.

This will ensure that the system is optimized for maximum production of electricity which means a better-performing system.

2. Sloped roof mounting system

In this system, the solar panels are mounted on a sloppy type of roof. It uses three main systems of solar mounting.

The first one is the rail-free mounting system. This is the most used system so far, it consists of screws, EPDM rubber, and screws which are used directly to fasten the solar panels to the sloped roof without the use of rails.

It appears to be the most economical option among the other sloped roof systems since it saves on material costs and offers maneuverability. Also, with its compact design, it saves a lot on transportation costs, since there is no long-piece rail.

If the tilt and orientation of the system are the same, the solar panels can be mounted in either portrait or landscape positions without affecting the entire system.

This means that, unlike the railed system which requires long distances to install a string of solar panels, the rail-free system saves more space.

The second system is the railed mounting system. Here, rails are fastened to the rooftop in a single straight line through a set of roof-mounted assemblies, screws, and bolts.

Then solar panels are installed onto the fastened rails either vertically or portrait style using clamps. In this system, there is the drilling of holes during the installation

The third system is called the shared rail mounting system. In this system, a rail placed in the middle of the array is used to support two rows of solar panels. Though it appears almost the same as the railed mounting system.

Here there are fewer roof penetrations compared to the railed mounting system because one whole length of rail is removed. The installation of solar panels is quick, and the panels can be positioned in any orientation.

3. Pitched-roof mounting solar system

This system is ideal for mounting both framed and frameless solar panels. The installation can be done easily and quickly since it comes with customized solutions. This also helps save on installation time.

It can be used in both residential and commercial roof solar installation systems. The solar panels are installed facing south with a 30-degree pitch. The rails can be fixed either in landscape or portrait mode depending on the client’s requirements.

This system has various components for installation. These components include an End Clamp Kit, Rail Splice Kit, Inter Clamp Kit, Grounding Washer, Grounding Lug, Braided Earthing Strap, and Rail. It has a wide range of roof attachments that meet every client’s needs and fulfill different requirements.

It is easy to install and has interchangeable parts that bring about quick configuration and makes the design process smooth. It is also made with lightweight aluminum that is corrosion-resistant for durability.

This system also uses adjustable module clamps that make it so flexible. They are also cost-effective and can withstand any weather conditions.

4. Solar shingles

This is a system where the solar is built-in into the structure, and the product is integrated into the roof and becomes part of the roof structure. This means that no rails or other mounting systems are required for installation. It is also less expensive to install but cannot be installed on metal roof structures.

However, you will need the right gear while installing the shingles since a slight mistake could lead to fires and serious injuries. This means that one has to be a professional to install the solar using this system.

Conclusion

Various types of roof solar mounting systems vary with the type of roof. Ensure you consult a professional installer before settling with any system. A professional will check the type of roof you use and all the safety measures before installing it to ensure a safe installation process.

They may also advise on which system to go for and help you make the right choice. Also, consider your budget when choosing a solar mounting system. However, roof mounting systems are less expensive than other systems. Choose a system that works for you.
